"It
is now 10 years since the publication of the second edition.
The third edition is now entitled McGlamry's Comprehensive
Textbook of Foot and Ankle Surgery. This reflects the contribution
made by McGlamry in initiating this publication, but also
the advancement in rear foot surgery in the podiatric profession.
The intended audience is students, researchers and physicians.
As the cost of the book is now approaching £300.00,
it must contain sufficient new material to warrant institutions
or individuals to upgrade the text if they already own the
second edition.
There are roughly 100 contributors from the American Podiatric
Establishment. I, therefore, feel that this textbook reflects
the American Podiatry Professions approach to foot and ankle
surgery, rather than a text which is a doctrine according
to a small number of authors. It is easily recognised, as
the layout and presentation is almost identical to the second
edition. It is presented in two volumes and is well illustrated,
but oh for some colour!
As one would expect, there are significant changes to the
content to reflect the current practice. Surprisingly the
chapter on radiology has been removed. I felt that this was
probably an area that warranted expansion as literature on
foot imaging is poorly covered especially since MRI and ultrasound
are routinely used today. There was also no room for a chapter
on sports injuries. I have read, in a previous unrelated book
review, a comment that noted a lack of information on post-operative
physical therapy to aid outcomes. This would have also been
a valuable edition to this book. An existing chapter, on treatment
of the diabetic foot was brief and in need of expansion.
Many chapters have been reviewed and expanded, notably the
chapter on pes valgus which is now divided into two with the
second section solely devoted to the treatment of tibialis
posterior dysfunction. There is also a separate section for
tarsal tunnel syndrome in the chapter for required neuropathies.
New chapters include haemostasis, osteochondroses and callus
distraction.
In summary, this addition is enhanced by the revisions and
expansions to many chapters and most current concepts of surgery
are covered. However, I thought it strange that something
like the Weil osteotomy is only briefly mentioned in this
book and is best illustrated in a rival orthopaedic text.
That said I feel this is the best text on foot and ankle surgery
available and is well worth the investment." - GM

"McGlamry’s Comprehensive Textbook of Foot
Surgery has long been regarded as the "bible of foot
and ankle surgery." So when I was given the opportunity
to review this book, I felt both honored and humbled. Readers
who are familiar with this textbook and have relied on it
for years will be pleasantly surprised by the quality and
scope of this newest edition. When the first edition appeared
in 1987, it was heralded as the definitive guide for podiatric
surgeons. It was the one "must have" text for students,
residents, and practicing physicians because it began at the
most basic level, with chapters on instrumentation, surgical
anatomy, diagnostic techniques, and the simplest of procedures.
The fundamentals were enhanced by clear, stepwise directions
for surgical techniques, and the book concluded with a glimpse
of the most advanced surgical techniques. In short, it covered
most of the material that podiatric surgeons needed to know
on a daily basis.
The second edition of this book built on the first edition,
primarily with organizational improvements, along with some
refinement of the original text. The first edition was offered
as a three-volume set (including the companion volume Fundamentals
of Foot Surgery), while the second edition incorporated all
subject matter into two larger volumes. However, there did
not appear to be a tremendous amount of new information.
This third edition is significantly different from its two
predecessors. Happily, the things that we have always liked
about McGlamry’s have been retained. The chapters on
fundamentals are still here, but have been refined. They are
easier to read, offer clearer diagrams, and have been updated
to reflect a broader range of concepts and instruments. The
new structure blends fundamentals and surgical techniques
more seamlessly than in previous editions. All of the chapters
dealing with surgical fundamentals have been expanded and
organized to make it easy to find specific information quickly.
I particularly enjoyed the chapter dealing with external fixation,
which demonstrated both callous distraction and stabilization
techniques and highlighted the appropriate use of these procedures
with excellent clinical photographs. Advances in biomaterials
and biotechnology are also well reflected in the newest edition.
Chapters on bone anchors and biomaterials give a contemporary
perspective on some of the most "cutting-edge" techniques
in use today.
As one progresses through the text, there is a sense that
the complexity of the surgery discussed increases. The organization
is also logical in that the text progresses from forefoot
to rearfoot, and from simple to complex deformities. Sections
dealing with ankle pathology have been notably expanded. Trauma
is now addressed in 13 well-written chapters, including an
excellent discussion on pediatric fracture management. The
current edition also includes ten chapters that deal with
"special surgery," including neuropathy, tumors,
plastic surgical techniques, diabetic foot and limb salvage,
and even arthroscopic techniques.
The current edition of McGlamry’s has notably improved
photographs, radiographs, and diagrams. The drawings are clean
and easy to understand. As was the case with previous editions,
the current one offers extensive reference lists and supporting
citations for all chapters. Also impressive is the sheer number
and diversity of the contributing authors. Previous editions
primarily showcased members of the Podiatry Institute, whereas
the current authorship is truly diverse, with recognized experts
drawn from a broad range of sources. This was no small feat:
both the preface and the introduction discuss the difficulties
that the editors encountered in drawing together such a diverse
and prominent group of authors.
This third edition of McGlamry’s is a major step forward
for the profession. Although it continues the work’s
traditions of attention to detail, clarity, and concision,
the information and its presentation have been dramatically
updated and improved. The basics are still there, but advanced
techniques figure much more prominently in this edition. Even
podiatrists who have the earlier editions of McGlamry’s
should treat themselves to the new one. It is an indispensable
reference that offers enough new information to make it well
worth the cost."
